Last-Minute Gift Ideas For Your Guinea Pigs
Okay, snicker if you like...but pets deserve Christmas (or Hanukkah) presents, too. A few suggestions, which can be found in almost any pet or pet supply store, follow.
Treat Baskets
Adding these treat "baskets" to a cage or play area puts a little variety in your pets' routine, and encourages them to stretch, reach, and work a bit harder at getting their food than they would if they sat passively and munched. These baskets get veggies and hay off the cage floor, and keep them dry, clean, and edible.
The Super Pet Veggie Twister is a spiral-shaped, semi-flexible basket that makes it easy to not just push in hay and vegetables but also to "layer" them in a way that encourages your critter to forage a little. If you have kids, they'd have fun arranging carrot sticks, lettuce leaves, parsley sprigs, and other goodies in the Twister. This is a new twist (sorry) on the round Veggie Basket (from Super Pet) or Treat Basket Ball (from IPSD, one of Petco's partners). The IPSD Large Treat Basket Ball -- suitable for guinea pigs, rabbits, and others -- is generally easily found in Petco stores but is difficult to find online.
Tunnels
The plastic tunnels found in most pet stores for ferrets are a bit narrow for adult guinea pigs. Fortunately, there's other great options: T-Rex Chubes and Super Pet Chewbular Play Tubes.
These tunnels are lightweight, chewable, come in a variety of safe/non-toxic colors, and the large size is big enough for guinea pigs (and some rabbits). This is one toy that is guaranteed not to sit unused in your pigs' play area!
Cozy Cups
Whether for play time, lap time, or cage time, Cozy Cups are a favorite with the rescue pigs. While the Super Pet Igloos (we call them "pigloos") are prime real estate in any guinea pig cage, the Cozy Cups come in a very close second. They're soft, warm, washable, and large enough for two adult guinea pigs -- assuming, of course, that one is even willing to share with the other. These are made by a number of manufacturers (Super Pet calls theirs the Cuddle Cup).
Just this week, thanks to Traci in Arizona who sent the rescue a couple, we learned of the beds created by Marsha Weaver at The Cozy Cavy in Alabama. Handmade for "the pampered pig," we fell for these soft and luxurious-feeling cozy beds. So did the rescue pigs!
(NOTE: Some of the items listed here are on our How To Spoil Your Guinea Pig page over at Squidoo. If you order them online through our page, the rescue gets a small percentage.)
If you have other suggestions, do share!!
